Dr. Michael S. Creef of Virginia Beach, VA was indefinitely suspended by the Virginia Board of Medicine (VBM) this past May. Creef had been previously suspended from practicing medicine in 2004 but continued to write prescriptions and treat patients even after he had been disciplined leading to this most recent disciplinary action.

The VBM alleged that Dr. Creef violated the Code of Virginia and the Board’s General Regulations in a variety of ways. Dr. Creef was alleged to have prescribed narcotics to patients without collecting a patient history or adequately examining them. He also prescribed pain medications without any attempts, through testing or diagnostics, to determine the source of pain. In one instance, the doctor prescribed Adderall to a minor following an examination that focused almost entirely on the patient’s acne. Furthermore, during a Department of Health Professionals (DHP) inspection, Dr. Creef’s office was found to not have heat nor hot water, built-up hazardous waste, and that each of the exam rooms lacked proper sanitation supplies.

While each of these counts violates standards the most egregious violations came from Dr. Creef’s relationship with Patient A. Dr. Creef was Patient A’s sponsor into a substance abuse program due to A’s addiction to Xanax. Even after detox Dr. Creef continued to prescribe Xanax to Patient A. Patient A would trade Creef vodka in exchange for the Xanax prescriptions. Creef also had patient A perform yard work, home repairs, and car repairs in exchange for the drug. Patient A lived in an apartment owned by Dr. Creef who had A purchase him a car in lieu of rent. Dr. Creef also purchased Patient A a motorcycle that the doctor was often able to use. The doctor also prescribed A with Adderall and requested that the patient provide him with the medication. Lastly, the doctor had A dress up in scrubs and a labcoat while wearing a wire so that Creef could learn information about other physicians.

Dr. Creef will be able to apply to the VBM for reinstatement in 3 years.
